MY INTERVIEW WITH CAMISHA LEMONS
Q1. What did you want to be growing up?
Surprisingly enough, I wanted to be a dancer and a lawyer. I always knew that I wanted to be either one, or manage to do both, which I’ve successfully been able to achieve.
Q2. Tell us about you:
My name is Camisha Marie Lemons; I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. I’m the managing attorney of The Law Office of Camisha Lemons. My firm provides legal services in: business, estate planning, and probate law. I graduated from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas where I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Dance & Dance Education, and received my Juris Doctorate from the Texas Southern University, Thurgood Marshall School of Law, in Houston. I’ve had various opportunities to teach and perform dance throughout the city of Houston. While I accomplished many achievements, I don’t define myself by professional tiles. I am devoted to volunteerism. Through my first love, dance, I provide dance education and access to children, as I help bring exposure and access to the arts. Also, I am the leader of both the Praise Dance Ministry and the Young Adult Ministry of my church community. I also teach dance and work summer dance camps with Virtuous Star, Inc. a non-profit organization for girls. My time is diversified between providing the best service to my clients; efficiently running my law practice; and giving back to my community as well. However, My family is what I’m most proud. I understand that my husband, Cory and I have the opportunity and responsibility to instill in our son, Cameron Dean: sound family values, Godly perspective, self-respect, work ethic, and overall wellbeing. My true desire is to live a life that brings glory to God! It is my faith and hard work that brought me this far and it will be my faith and work ethic that takes me further. In my spare time, I serve as a health and wellness advocate.
Not to mention, I love to laugh and let my hair down, dance, read, relax with my family.
Q3. What is one of your most treasured accomplishments?
Completing law school and passing the bar will always be a treasured accomplishment of mine. No one in family has obtained a post graduate degree; I am the first to do so and that means a lot to me. Transparently, I struggled internally while in law school, and often times, I was not sure if I would graduate or pass the bar. I actually took the Texas Bar exam three times, which I used to be ashamed to say, but I realized that as I shared my story, it was inspiring and powerful to others. I also realized that it was apart of the process I needed to go through in order to be able to advocate well not only for myself, but for my clients.
Q4. Tell how you process work load stress or personal stress or just to much coming at you at one time? Ex: Exercise, Meditation, Journal, EFT Tapping, Running or all the above.
What is your Personal Process? I’ll let you in on a secret…are you ready? I’m am not a great manager of stress or decompression. Yikes right?! My personal process is a daily learning curve. I’ve decided to pick up exercising and dancing more as a way to decompress. I am also learning to simply “be”; meaning, I’m actually taking the time to be still and rest, which is much needed, but often overlooked. Music is also a passion of mine, so often times, I just sit and zone out, while singing very loudly. Really it’s whatever I feel that I need in the present moment, I’m taking the time to do it more often.
Q5. What advice would you give to someone looking to just start their career?
I would first tell them to determine their why; why do you want to pursue this particular career? Establishing your why at the outset will help to carry you in those seasons of frustration, slowness, fatigue or when you want to quit. (Trust me, these moments will come and you can push through it). Your why will sustain you through the ebbs and flows of your business.
Next, I would tell you to be true to your authentic self. Yes, you will have to mature and grow, but at your core, always be you. Customers and clients aren’t looking for the next version of another person, they want the original version of you. You never know who you will inspire, who is waiting to connect with you or what opportunities await you because you are simply being you.
Lastly, I would tell them to be intentional in your personal development as a leader and in your industry. It is imperative to pour into yourself and become your best self in order for your business to thrive. Be a lifelong student and take the time to learn about yourself. Not only that, learn how to grow yourself, research the industry you want to pursue and how you can add value and serve a need through your business.
Q6. If you could speak to one woman from history, who would it be?
I’d like to speak with Shirley Chisholm. She was the first African-American woman elected to the U.S. Congress. She was an educator by training, but she was a passionate and effective advocate for the needs of minorities, women and children and changed the nation’s perception about the capabilities of women and African Americans. In my eyes, Shirley Chisholm was one of many trailblazers who paved the way for people like me. To speak with her would be enlightening and full of wisdom.
Q7. Favorite quote?
“If we don’t define ourselves for ourselves, we will be crunched into other people’s fantasies for us and eaten alive”. ~Audrey Lorde
Q8. Would you change anything in your life up to this point?
Years ago my answer to this question would have been a resounding yes, but over the years, maturity has taught me that my path is uniquely customized for me. Everything I have experienced up to this point serves its own purpose, even the bad and the ugly ones.
So, I guess the answer is no, although, there a few things I’d like to go back to share with the younger Camisha:
- Always let your light shine bright.
- Let your yes be yes, and your no be no.
- Be bold and courageous.
- It’s all going to work out; so don’t worry so much.
- We’re going to do great things kid, things you never imagined.
- Enjoy the ride. You’re going to make us proud.
