Q1. What did you want to be growing up?
I wanted to be an Architect, I’m not too far from it though. I Studied in the Art Field at the University. I Studied Industrial Arts, Textiles Option and I am harnessing the acquired knowledge and skills through various ways to effect changes in my community.
Q2. Tell us all about you and the story of how you have gotten to this point in your life?
It has been a complete learning journey, but I am totally excited at the journey. There were low moments and high moments but all of that shaped me into the woman I am today.
I was offered the opportunity to pursue my master’s degree in arts on scholarship to become a junior lecturer in my faculty at the University after I finished serving as a teaching assistant, but I declined. I had a visual presentation of what I wanted to do in life then, so I went out to pursue my dream of becoming an entrepreneur and empowering women. As I went along, I got distracted by friends who were working in the Banks and were receiving good renumeration and fat salaries, they were buying their first cars and building their first homes and I got enticed by that. So, I got my CV together and started pursuing for a banking job. Fortunately or unfortunately, the banks wouldn’t employ me. They said I was a First-Class Honors student, and they weren’t employing those people. With great disappointment, I carried my CV from bank to bank for over a year. It was then, I decided that I banking sector was not for me.
Gradually I began to unfold into my worth, my dream and the desire to be different and effective in my generation. So, with the help of trusted people and may family I launched a fashion magazine that was called “IN-THING MAGLOGUE”. This magazine was used to project the image of our local print fabrics to increase the patronage of our African Prints.
I was given two bails of fabrics by a textile company to put our prints into westernized styles so that they will be appealing to the younger generation there by increasing sales. With the help of some fashion designers and dressmakers, we pulled this off successfully. This landed me a one-year billboard contract, from there came the strong passion to empower women through Artisan Craft workshops to start small businesses of their own. I had met a lot of young women who needed help at that time and fortunately I had the human resources to assist these young women acquire some craft skills from the fashion designers I was working with. This Charitable entity gained legs and soon wings. An Anglican Priest in a town in Ghana called Prampram, heard of the services we were offering to the women and decided to support us. They gifted us a huge land to use as our training centre. We trained over 400 women during that time. This same model has been modified and its being used in England today.
I think I am delighted at this journey of self-discovery, that has gifted me the opportunity to give back to my community and make a difference in the life of women who are in need of this service.
Q3. What do you think are the three biggest mistakes women make when it comes to achieving their goals?
- The fear of failing even before they start
- Self-doubt
- Procrastination
Q4. What is one of your most treasured accomplishments?
One of My most treasured accomplishment is being the mum my children ever wanted and needed.
Q5. Tell how you process work load stress or personal stress or just to much coming at you at one time? Ex: Exercise, Meditation, Journal or all the above.
What is your Personal Process?
I quickly shelve whatever is giving me stress and take a chill pill. I relax with my legs up and my favorite drink in my hand whiles I listen to some inspiring music. Sometimes I watch a comedy or an interesting movie that will make me laugh my heart out. I am fully aware that my children’s first point of call is me, so I must make sure that I am always physically and mentally sound for them. Anything that will destabilize me will have to go or be shelved to be visited at the appropriate time.
Q6. Do you have any beauty secrets to your amazing?
My secret is I like to do all my beauty stuff myself. I love organic products for my skin and hair. I also do my own braids and weaves, I sew quite a good number of my clothes and I do most of my jewelry and accessories, I teach these things, so I tend to use them too. My children call me “Super Mum”.
Q7. Do you believe there is some sort of pattern or formula to becoming successful, you are killing it?
I think determination and consistency will get you there. The road to success is not an easy one but it is the best teacher we can ever have and at the end when success is smiling at you, you begin to cherish the trip even more.
Q8. If you could speak to one woman from history, who would it be?
That will be Mary Wollstonecraft, the English writer and Philosopher who championed education and liberation for women. It is because of people like her, today, I can read and write and live a life of no restrictions as a woman.
