MY INTERVIEW WITH KATARINA VAN DERHAM
Q1. Your portfolio and accomplishments are off the charts. What have you been up to and what are you focusing on now?
First, let me thank you for another opportunity to be featured on your platform and for the continuous support to me, as well as to so many other women. It’s been 7 years since you and I first talked, and a lot has changed. If you remember, your first question to me back then was, “Who did you want to be when you grew up?” My answer to that was that as a child, I wanted to be a princess. Well, I am happy to report that today, I live in a “castle.” My LA house on the inside looks like an 18th-century castle, and I rent it out to different production companies as a shooting location. The Bridgerton series has created a trend which has helped my business tremendously. Remaining largely within the confines of my home, I find myself living akin to a princess in her castle—although perhaps, at this stage, I should dub myself queen;)
Additionally, I continue to manage my brand of false lashes, KAT Lash, and I am in the process of revitalizing my beauty brand, Glamour Garden Cosmetics, with plans to introduce new products later this year. Since our initial conversation, I have had the privilege of starring in three films released in 2020 (“Unbelievable!!!”), 2021 (“Crypto Heads”), and 2024 (“Havnaa”), as well as appearing in music videos for Tito Jackson and Dorothy.
I also launched a limited-edition line of boho dresses, and I remain passionately involved with my cherished endeavor,www.vivaglammagazine.com
Q2. How do you balance work-life, creativity, and find time for yourself?
Achieving a harmonious work-life balance has never been my forte. So, when in 2018 I unexpectedly lost my only brother, it took a huge toll on me as I hadn’t experienced such loss before. The grief and sadness stalled my creativity and interrupted my productivity. Then, we found ourselves in a global pandemic, and in 2021 my mom was diagnosed with cancer. Because of that, I started traveling to my home country every 6 weeks to spend as much time as possible with her and my dad. Acting strong in front of her when I was screaming inside drained me into depression. Balancing work-life, creativity, and time for myself became a daunting task for me. I still struggle with it, as I am an empath and internalize feelings on a much deeper level than the average person. I can honestly say that just this summer, I am slowly finding my healthy balance.
Q3. What is your favorite morning routine to get aligned/grounded to start your day?
Recently, I wrote a thank-you letter to the Universe, so I start my day by reading it out loud. It includes my gratitude as well as the things I hope to accomplish, which puts me in a good mood. Then I check social media for the news, which often puts me in a bad mood! LOL. To clear my mind, I go for a walk with my dog Daisy, and after a short walk, I come back, make myself a coffee, and start working.
Q4. What is one beauty secret that everyone can adopt?
I’d say don’t follow trends. Find the look and style that best fits your personality and face. You can modify it slightly by incorporating elements of current trends if you wish, but really consider if the current trend is right for you. Many trends today are curated to look good in photos on social media, but they may not always be flattering in real life. Notice how every beauty photo is taken in extremely bright light or with the person facing the sun. Then you step out on a gloomy day, and shadows fall from a different angle, making your glowing makeup suddenly look like a greasy face.
Q5. Where can we find you?
I have already lost my original Instagram account and my Facebook page twice, and I wonder what’s next. But as of now, you can most often find me on Instagram @katarinavanderham. For future reference (in case my account disappears again), my website, katarinavanderham.com, serves as a reliable hub where you can access all relevant links to connect with me.
