OUR INTERVIEW:
Q1. How long have you been practicing yoga?
15 years
Q2. What is Acro Yoga? When did you know Acro Yoga was your thing?
Acro Yoga is a blend of yoga and acrobatics. It was a practice I found and fell in love with when I first moved to NYC. Back then, it wasn’t as well known. In fact, my partner Matt and I would practice with just a yoga mat on the dirty concrete in SoHo and people would walk by and stare at us like we were zoo animals. Many asked, “What made you want to do that?” – Haha!
I loved this practice for the way it summoned a higher level of trust in myself, and in another human being, than I’d ever experienced before. Every victory was “WE” and every time we fell it was “WE.” Never “YOU” never “ME.” I felt like that type of connection and accountability in this digital age was something I’d been deeply craving and I found it in Acro Yoga.
Q3. What is AWAKE?
The word “AWAKE” means a lot to me; always has really. Since I started down the yoga road pretty early in life. I would sometimes get bored while practicing, and when I did I would watch my teachers move. I studied them. I found that it wasn’t about getting to the next great pose, it was deeper than that. To me, it was about staying awake. My teachers had eyes to see what was right in front of them. They had peace for what was and, at the same time, space for what could be. The seed was planted back then that I was going to walk the awake path.
Q4. What benefits does movement of the body have?
“If you want to give birth to your true self, you are going to have to dig deep down into that body of yours and let your soul howl. Sometimes you have to take a leap of faith and trust that if you turn off your head, your feet will take you where you need to go.”
Gabrielle Roth
I love this quote from G. Roth because it illustrates so beautifully how our bodies remember. They remember a time long ago when we were not ashamed for the way we moved. For the way we expressed joy, pleasure, grief, passion, pain, and how we honored our inate wisdom and rhythms that connected us all. To move from that place in me, is to
