Q1. What did you want to be growing up?
I have a great love for animals and nature so I wanted to be a vet up until I was about 16. I remember begging for more pets as a kid and ended up with a dog and two cats. I tried for the horse but my parents put their foot down. I was a ballerina, horseback rider and piano player/singer as a child so dreamed of doing something creative too but did not know what until much later. Writing and journalism became my passion!
Q2. What are 5 words that best describe you?
Passionate, industrious, creative, honest, perfectionist
Q3. When did you get started with your lifestyle blog?
I started it in 2014 after moving to LA with my husband and two children from NYC for lifestyle reasons. I felt the need to be surrounded by sunshine, nature, mountains and water. Prior to that, I ran an online lifestyle magazine called PageDaily that started from a blog called AskMelissa in 2002 (this was before the term “blog” was a household word).
Q4. What is one of your most treasured accomplishments in your career?
Building and running an online publishing company (PageDaily) from scratch that came from a simple business idea called “Ask Melissa.” Then landing a partnership with NBC where I was a lifestyle expert doing monthly segments for the Weekend Today Show in New York. I had no prior TV or on-air experience!
Q5. Please share a piece of advice that you have received which has helped you throughout your journey?
“Don’t sweat the small stuff….and it’s mostly small stuff”!
Q6. Where do you get your expertise from?
I get it from all aspects of my life from living with once teenage kids, now young adults, (social media) to working with other female bloggers who I admire. I also spent many years working in New York City with some of the top digital media professionals in the business. Much of my expertise comes from trial and error…and learning from mistakes along the way!
Q7. Who is your favorite designer?
I don’t have a specific favorite, but several that I love: Isabel Marant, Chloe and Ulla Johnson.
Q8. Describe a day in the life of Melissa Meyers?
I start my day with a healthy breakfast and workout each morning, even if it’s a brisk walk for 20 minutes. I find that sets the stage for the day and keeps my mind clear and ready for business. I don’t have a typical day but my week is divided between attending blogger or press events to learn about new product launches, road-testing the products, taking photographs and being photographed, and sitting by the computer writing and working on blog posts. As a lifestyle blogger, I find it very important to work on my social media for 1-2 hours a day! I love trying to new restaurants and meeting business associates, friends and family for lunch or dinner a few times a week in between my hectic work and event schedule.
Q9. You have so many years of experience under your belt as a brand ambassador, blogger and lifestyle expert, which one has been the most fulfilling to you?
I love being a blogger because it’s very personal and I am able to connect and engage directly with my audience! That alone empowers and inspires me.
Q10. What platform have you used that has played a part in making your message successful?
Instagram and Instagram stories. Also, my blog & newsletter!
Q11. What advice do you have for other women looking to start their own journey?
- Be ready to commit a lot of your time and energy when starting your own business…it’s a 24/7 kind of thing.
- Don’t be afraid to makes mistakes…you will learn a lot from them.
- Find a mentor to help you navigate the ins and outs of your new business, project or assemble a board of advisors.
- Supplement employees pay with equity instead of straight salary or offer a commission based on merit if that applies.
- Hire slowly and fire quickly (a good one to remember)!
Q12. What motivates you?
Engaging with women each day to help them be the best they can be and to find their inner and outer glow motivates me. One of my biggest passions has always been finding the best lifestyle products and services out there and then sharing them with other women.
Continuing to be a role model for my children with a good work ethic motivates me. Gratitude for life, my family, friends, appreciation for the moment. Cultivating new friends and nurturing existing relationships. Always trying to improve and do better.
