MY INTERVIEW WITH RACHEL SHEFFIELD
Q1. What did you want to be growing up?
I always was attracted to paperwork and organization. So, I wanted to be a receptionist when I grow up. The envisioning of my personal office desk looked so promising as a child.
Q2. What motivates you when you are planning a design project?
Motivation appears when I have a great playlist lined up and when I start the project at the crack of dawn or late nights. I feel like I am more creative when the world is asleep and the distractions of social media are not pulling me into its realm.
Q3. What is a day in the life at Rachel Designs?
A day at Rachel Designs starts very early in the morning. I’m usually out of bed by 5 AM. This gives me a chance to grab a cup of tea and read a book or an article. Preparation for my design pieces for marketing and advertising on social media begins shortly after. Rachel Designs business hours are from 9 AM- 5 PM CST so during that time I am either checking emails, following up with clients, networking and during my free time I am updating our Redbubble Shop with new and amazing designs.
Q4. If you could only choose 1 app or program to work with, what would your ultimate favorite be?
Wow! My ultimate favorite app would be Instagram easily. Instagram layout always gravitates my eye. The joy of seeing the aesthetic of my designs being displayed on their grids.
Q5. Please share with our tribe of Women, one piece of advice that you have received which has helped you throughout your journey?
To the wonderful tribe of Women my advice would be embrace your failures because they are going to come. You either walk in faith or fear. Both are unknown! However, you have to make a decision on how you are going to move forward! Most importantly stay true to yourself!
Q6. You specialize in all facets of graphic design, do you have a secret system that you use when gathering ideas for your creations?
The secret is starting out with an understanding of the problem and what I am trying to accomplish with a design. Afterwards I grab a pen and piece of paper and begin to brainstorm for like 30 minutes or so. Lastly, I keep in mind that—there is a process as a creator that I must follow in order to get the best result possible.
Q7. Tell how you process workload stress or personal stress or just too much coming at you at one time?
How I process the workload that comes at me is writing a checklist. Then I prioritize the work by its due dates on this software called Trello, so I can see the big picture.
Once all the organizations of the workload are completed, I will focus on what is important on the list.
Q8. If you could speak to one woman from history, who would it be?
I would speak to the First Lady, Michelle Obama. When I first did my book report in High School on this amazing African American woman of history, I gravitated towards her work ethic and her determination to accomplish what she set out to achieve in life. Learning how we shared so many characteristics inspired me to follow her journey even closer. I would love to speak to her about how much of an impact she has made on my life.
Q9. Favorite quote?
“Your smile is your logo, your personality is your business card, how you leave others feeling after having an experience with you becomes your trademark.”
—Jay Danzie
